Neck & Shoulder Pain

What We Typically See.
Does This Sound Like You?

You don't know when it started particularly, but there tends to be daily discomfort with increasing amount of headaches, stiffness in the morning and after working at your desk all day.

When it is really bad, you may feel numbness or even burning pains in your arms or hands – all of which have a huge impact on your life!

There are times where you remember having ‘slept awkwardly' or there was a particularly stressful commute home.

It is fair to say that usually your Neck and Shoulder pain typically self resolves within a few days and the arm pains can settle on their own.

But at this point, you are getting more and more worried and it is simply just not going away.

Please don't worry, there are numerous reasons why people experience Neck and Shoulder Pain:

  • Changes in workload, posture or demands in your day.

  • Changes in pillows or bedding.

  • Increased stressors in your life.

  • Repeated movements into positions of nerve or joint compression.

  • Weakness and lack of stability in the neck, shoulder or lower arm.

In order to fully get to the root problem of your Neck and Shoulder pain, we need to target the cause of the pain, calm the symptoms and address the underlying gaps in function.

4 Step Plan To Ease Your Neck & Shoulder Pain

Pain Management Plan

Modify your day to day activities that are driving any aggravating positions. Avoid 'testing' it to see if the catching pain is still there!

Use a combination of heat and cold to ease the background achey, dullness. This might be a shower, heat patch or microwave wheat bag.

Speak with a pharmacist about the best type of pain medication you can take through the day.

And Breathe

Neck pain that refers into the upper shoulder can be relentless and often gets worse when we are stressed.

Start with trying some meditation, breathing and mindfulness techniques alongside your pain management plan.

Deep nasal breathing mechanics not only calm the nervous system but stretch and activate the rib muscles which can ease neck pain.

Keep It Moving

It is important that we maintain some basic movement in the Neck and Shoulders so that we don't compound it with more stiffness and delay our recovery.

Find a movement routine that works for you, which is typically NOT in sitting!

Don't forget the benefits of general activity too, perhaps a light walk or yoga can be brilliant way to ease your symptoms.

Get It Assessed

If your symptoms are persisting longer than a few days or have been lingering on and off over a few years, then you should get your  neck pain diagnosed.

We can get to the root driver of your neck pain with detailed questioning, physical testing and diagnostic checks.

We can also provide manual therapy like mobilisation, massage and exercise therapy prescription to accelerate your recovery.
