Post Surgical Rehabilitation
What We Typically See.
Does This Sound Like You?
You've had an injury which has left you severely debilitated, meaning you need an operation or long time on the side lines to get things back to a level of normal. You don't know what that is going to be like and you are sat on a waiting list or have your operation date planned.
You come out of the operation; bandages covering wounds, pain radiating from your surgical site and a sheet of advice and guidance to take home. You are just resting up and the road forward is daunting! You may have come out of the hospital worse than when you went it!
Going through the process and undergoing an operation is daunting at the best of times, but that feeling of not knowing what is going on after the process is all done is only going to make your recovery harder!
We have the experience, support and time to take that stress from you and make your recovery as smoothy as possible.
We have seen many spinal, upper limb and lower limb presentations post op, most of which begin with us prior to the procedure taking place. We can sit down and go through what to expect, talk about when you can push things and when to back off.
To get you back to full recovery, speak with us as soon as you can. The more functional you are prior to your operation to better you will come out.
We have a variety of options that you can take to get top class professional sports care, including multi buy discounted sesssions and our Hybrid Care package.
4 Step Plan To Optimise Your Recovery Post Op.
Don't Rush The Rest
After an operation, it is imperative that you respect the healing and recovery process.
Scar tissue will be laid down in a disorderly manner, so excessive movement and stress at the wound site and surgical area will be disrupted meaning inappropriate healing may occur.
Utilise the slings, crutches and supports as best you can to keep the tissues protected and injury site healthy.
Time Your Pain Medication
You may be given a variety of pain medications to take after your operation.
Review the medications with your discharge nurse and optimise when you can take them to best facilitate things like personal hygiene, sleeping and dressing yourself.
You body will recover best when you are comfortable and able to sleep whilst providing the opportunity to still complete your basic daily tasks.
POLICE The Area
We've already discussed Protecting the area but let's recap the other things we can do.
Optimally Load - Really light movements and exercises to get things moving safely.
Ice - Super useful and accesible way for local pain management.
Compress - Tubular bandages are great for this. Keep the area tightly squeezed to minimise swelling.
Elevate - Get the area above chest height if able, to facilitate blood and swelling return.
Function Not Timelines
With the support of your consultant or surgeon, we can get started usually within 7-10days post op.
It is important that we follow the guidelines from the get- go but remember that these are guidelines. Recovery often takes a bit longer so we progress and amend based on function and not just time.
Meaning less chance of flare ups, aggravation and more chance of a smooth recovery and timely rehabilitation.
